SILVERcare of Greenville, NC is a locally owned, licensed home care agency that was established in 1993 in Greenville, North Carolina. We provide in-home assistance and personal care services to the elderly, disabled and injured. We like to think of ourselves as mature America’s best friend.
With the scorching temperatures of North Carolina quickly climbing, cases of heat strokes and overheating will begin to become more and more common. Those over the age of 65 are especially at risk for experiencing these. Luckily, with some planning and precaution, heat-caused accidents can be prevented.
The most important step to take to prevent overheating is to stay hydrated. On average, you are supposed to drink about 8 glasses of water a day. However, when you are spending time outdoors during the summer, you should drink at least 2 glasses of cold water per hour in order to stay hydrated.
When it’s hot outside, you want to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors. Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day especially, which is usually early to mid-afternoon.
If you take certain medications or have certain health conditions, you can be especially at risk for experiencing heat related complications. Speak with your doctor to see if you have any of these risk factors. If you do, be sure to take extra precautions when outdoors during the summer.
When you do go outdoors, be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to prevent sunburn, which can increase your chances of having a heat stroke. Also, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to help keep your body cool in the heat.
